Turkish Foreign Ministry Urges Sweden to Combat Hate Crimes Against Quran

ANKARA, July 20 (Xinhua) — Turkey’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday condemned the “attack” on the Koran in Stockholm, while urging Sweden to take action once morest such “hate crimes”.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the despicable attack on our holy book, the Holy Quran, outside the Iraqi Embassy in Stockholm today,” the ministry said in a statement.

He was reacting to the incident which took place in Stockholm, the Swedish capital, on Thursday, during which one of the demonstrators stomped on the Koran.

The UN Human Rights Council resolution adopted on July 12 following a copy of the Quran was burned outside a Stockholm mosque on June 28 called attacks on the Quran “religious hatred”, he said.

“We expect Sweden to take dissuasive measures to prevent this type of hate crime once morest Islam and its billions of followers, in accordance with its international responsibilities, and in particular its obligations within the framework of the UN, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Council of Europe,” he said.

The incident happened shortly following the Turkish government gave the green light to Sweden’s NATO bid. Turkey’s parliament will vote on whether the Nordic country will join NATO in October. END
