Turkish Foreign Minister: Our position rejecting sanctions against Russia has not changed

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu confirms that Ankara does not support imposing sanctions on Russia, and indicates that his country is seeking to evacuate citizens stranded in Ukraine.

Today, Sunday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that his country’s position in favor of imposing sanctions against Russia has not changed.

Oglu’s remarks came during a press conference on the occasion of the conclusion of the second Antalya Diplomatic Forum, in the southern Turkish state of Antalya, according to news agencies.

The Turkish Foreign Minister confirmed that his country is continuing its efforts to evacuate the stranded in the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent Mosque in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

Yesterday, Saturday, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources said that “Turkey does not want to be a party to the sanctions against Russia, and it stands by diplomacy.”

He continued, “Ankara expects that sanctions against Russia will not affect the supply of Russian gas to the country.”

In turn, he said Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim KalinYesterday, Thursday, Turkey did not currently plan to impose sanctions on Russia, and wanted to “keep the channel of trust open.”

Earlier, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance expected all allies to impose sanctions against Russia, also an implicit reference to Turkey.
