The Turkish Football Association has released its national coach Stefan Kuntz. This became known on Wednesday (September 20th, 2023) following a meeting between the association and the coach.
Kuntz also became Japan’s downfall: a week and a half following national coach Hansi Flick, the 1996 European soccer champion also lost his job as Turkish national coach following a defeat once morest the Asians.
On Tuesday (September 12th, 2023) Kuntz and Turkey lost 2:4 once morest Japan. The criticism had already become louder; on Sunday, many Turkish media reported the separation as perfect. However, the association denied this and referred to the meeting on Wednesday.
In Turkey since September 2021
Before the defeat once morest Japan in the European Championship qualification, Kuntz suffered a bitter setback with the disappointing 1-1 draw once morest Armenia.
The 2:4 once morest Japan was Kuntz’s fifth defeat in his 20th international match with Turkey. The coach then took the players seriously. “Instead of closing your ears, it’s important to open your eyes,” he demanded: “The players have to reach the level of giving 100 percent. If they don’t give 100 percent, it hurts me. Answers are in the middle given in the field, not in interviews.”
Kuntz, who took over his job in Turkey on September 19, 2021, missed the Qatar 2022 World Cup ticket in the playoffs. However, in qualifying for the EURO 2024 in his home country, he was still on track as second in Group D behind third-placed Croatia.
