Turkish club Basaksehir announced that former German international Mesut Ozil joined its ranks on a one-year contract, the day following announcing his departure from Fenerbahce.
The Turkish champion for the year 2020 said in a statement: “Our club signed a one-year contract, renewable for another year, with Ozil.”
Fenerbahce had announced, on Wednesday, that Ozil would leave the team two years before the expiration of his contract with a “mutual agreement”, following he was excluded from the first team at the end of last March.
The former Arsenal player joined the Turkish club less than a year and a half ago, but was expelled in the spring from the team following entering into a conflict with the management.
The player of Turkish origin, who won the World Cup with the German national team in 2014 in Brazil, was criticized in Germany shortly before the World Cup in Russia, because of a picture of him with Erdogan.
After denouncing the attacks, which he described as “racist”, he announced his international retirement following the 2018 World Cup.
