Turki Al-Sheikh: “Auntie” is a distortion of our history

The head of the General Entertainment Authority, Turki Al-Sheikh, revealed (Thursday) that the aunt worn by one of the participants in the “Saudi Idol” program is not a traditional garment in the Hijaz region.

And Al-Sheikh said on his official page on Twitter: “I have two voices that impressed me and touched me, and I hope that the committee does not take my words. But I blame him. I hope to see him wearing Saudi clothing next time, because this aunt is neither our aunt nor the aunt of the people of Hijaz… The second is from Jizan, who was at the end of the second episode… God be upon him,” he said.

And the head of the General Authority for Entertainment wrote in another tweet: “This is not the clothes of the people of Hijaz, and the clothes of an outsider to us, and she is not our aunt … The people of Hijaz are on the eye and the head, but this is a distortion of our history, and we will not accept or allow the participation of any band or activity in entertainment with the aunt.”

And Al-Sheikh added in the tweet: “Even when the precious Yanbu band came in the Riyadh season, they were wearing his uncle’s headdress or the original aunt of the people of Hijaz,” he said.

The head of the General Authority for Entertainment entered into a discussion with a number of tweeters regarding the “aunt” and whether it was a tradition and clothing of the people of Hijaz, and Al-Sheikh insisted that the aunt was “an intruder” on the culture of the Hijaz region.
