Turkey to give $265 rent allowance to earthquake victims

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that earthquake victims in the southeast of the country will receive housing allowance within a year. It is planned to pay 5,000 liras ($265) to the owners of the destroyed apartments, and 2,000 liras ($106) to tenants.

“Instructions have been given to the Ministry of Urban Development and the Environment. In ten provinces, on the one hand, we will remove the rubble, on the other hand, we will build new houses in reserved areas. I ask you to give us one year,” the Turkish president said in an address to citizens (quoted by RIA Novosti).

On February 8, Recep Tayyip Erdogan reported that at the initial stage, it is planned to pay 10,000 liras ($530) to each family affected by the earthquakes. The Turkish authorities decided to allocate $5.3 billion to eliminate the consequences of the incident.

The earthquake in the south-east of Turkey and in the north-western part of Syria occurred on the night of February 6. Its magnitude is up to 7.8. Later in the followingnoon, another earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.7, hit central Turkey. According to the latest data, 19,388 people died in the country, 77,711 were injured. The Fitch rating agency estimated Turkey’s economic losses from the earthquake at $4 billion.
