Turkey-Syria earthquake death toll exceeds 41,000… UN relief vehicles arrive in rebel areas

The death toll from the earthquake that hit southern Turkey and northwestern Syria on the 6th has exceeded 41,000 as of the 14th.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the death toll in Turkey stood at 35,418.

The Archyde.com news agency reported on the 15th that the number of deaths in Syria exceeded 5,814, according to reports from the United Nations and Syrian state media.

More than 4,000 of them came from rebel-held areas in northwestern Syria, the news agency said.

“We will continue the rescue operation until we rescue the last person left under the collapsed building,” Erdogan said following a ministerial meeting at the headquarters of Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD).

“All homes and workplaces that have been destroyed or rendered uninhabitable will be rebuilt and handed over to their rightful owners,” Erdogan said.

In the midst of this, ‘Archyde.com’ news agency reported that nine survivors were rescued from the site of the earthquake in Turkey on the 14th.

Meanwhile, the first convoy carrying UN aid supplies arrived in northwestern Syria on the same day using the newly opened Bab al-Salam corridor from Turkey to northwest Syria.

Earlier, the United Nations and the Syrian government agreed on the 13th to open two border passages for an additional three months to deliver aid to rebel areas in northwestern Syria.
