  • The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday March 17. for the war crime of “illegal deportation” of Ukrainian children.
  • More than 16,000 Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia since the invasion on February 24, 2022, according to kyiv, and many were reportedly placed in institutions and foster homes.
  • The Ukrainian President hailed on Telegram a “historic decisionwhich marks the beginning of a historic responsibility”.
  • The Kremlin has rejected the legal value of this mandate, recalling that Russia does not recognize this court. “Therefore, from the point of view of the law, the decisions of this tribunal are null and void”Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian president, told the press.
  • For US President Joe Biden, whose country does not recognize the ICC either, this arrest warrant is “justified” and send “a very strong signal”.
  • The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, hailed “an important decision” and the United Kingdom a measure that will “bring those at the top of the Russian regime, including Vladimir Putin, to account”.
  • Slovakia to deliver thirteen Soviet-designed Mig-29 fighters to Ukraine, Prime Minister Eduard Heger announced on Friday. It thus becomes the second country of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), following Poland, to take such a decision.
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Russia from March 20 to 22, to discuss with Vladimir Putin the deepening of their “strategic cooperation”, announced the Chinese foreign ministry.
  • Discussions on the international agreement allowing the export of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea continue. Everything is being done to ensure that they succeed, said the United Nations (UN). But the continuation of this agreement beyond the deadline of Saturday evening seems uncertain because of a disagreement on its duration between Moscow and Kyiv.
