Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Turkey would support Sweden’s accession to NATO if the European Union resumes long-stalled membership talks with Ankara.
“First, open the way for Turkey’s EU membership, and then we will open it for Sweden,” Erdogan said in a televised statement before leaving to attend a NATO summit on Monday. As we opened it for Finland.”
He said Ankara could support Sweden’s NATO bid if the EU accepts Turkey, as he did in a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden on Sunday.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said that Sweden’s accession depends on the implementation of the agreement reached during the alliance summit in Madrid last June, and that no one should expect a compromise from Ankara.
According to international media reports, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that he supports Ankara’s EU membership, as far as he is concerned, Sweden has already met the requirements for NATO membership.
On the other hand, German Chancellor Olaf Schulz also said that Turkey’s position is a positive development. “I hope that Sweden will soon be able to become a member of NATO,” Scholes said in Berlin.
It should be noted that Turkey first applied to become a pioneer member of the European Economic Community in 1987.
Turkey became an EU candidate country in 1999 and formally opened membership negotiations with the bloc in 2005, but since 2016 negotiations have stalled over human rights allegations.
