Turkey inaugurates first nuclear power plant with Russian cooperation

Turkey inaugurated the country’s first nuclear power plant built with the help of Russia.

According to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, on Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said during his virtual speech at the nuclear fuel delivery ceremony for the first time at the Akio Power Plant that Turkey has become one of the countries with nuclear power in the world after a delay of 60 years. has joined the queue.

With the delivery of nuclear fuel by air and sea to the Aquivo Power Plant, the plant has now attained the status of a nuclear plant.

The Akkuyu nuclear plant, built in Turkey’s southern province of Mersin, is expected to have a production capacity of 4,800 megawatts and four reactors, the nuclear plant will be able to start generating electricity later this year.

It may be recalled that an intergovernmental agreement between Turkey and Russia for the Akuyo nuclear plant was signed in May 2010 and the groundbreaking ceremony for the plant was held on April 3, 2018, after which construction began on the first unit.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said that, like many important projects, Akio was implemented with a financing model that does not burden our national budget and is our largest joint investment with Russia.

He added that this project will contribute to reducing Turkey’s natural gas imports by 1.5 billion dollars annually and will also lead to an increase in national income.
