Turkey: Escalating tension off Kasos, violations and gathering of warships – 2024-07-24 19:53:14

A strange situation prevails in the southern Aegean with Turkey causing tensions on the occasion of the Greek NAVTEX for the laying of cables by the Italian ship “IEVOLI RELUME”, which is working in the south of Kasos for the electric interconnection project of Crete and Cyprus, also known as “Great Sea Interconnector-GSI”.

According to “Kathimerini”, Turkish warships have been deployed in the wider area and this is a gradual escalation of tension by Turkey, which on July 18, 2024, on the one hand, issued an anti-NAVTEX, in which it claimed that the area south of the Karpathos, as it appears on the map below, it is part of its continental shelf and on the other hand it proceeded to two violations of the Athens FIR in the southeast Aegean with two helicopters.

However, Turkey continued its provocations, since in the last 24 hours the Turkish frigates Gökova and Göksu of the Gabya class, the corvette Beykoz of the Burak class were deployed in this area, while yesterday there were four violations of the Athens FIR in the southeast Aegean by two helicopters and one unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and two more Turkish surface units were deployed in the area.

For its part, the Greek Navy has deployed the frigate “Nikephoros Fokas” and the gunboat “Aettitos”, with the Coast Guard reinforcing the Greek naval forces with an open sea patrol vessel, which oversees the operations of the vessel “IEVOLI RELUME “, located just outside Greek territorial waters.
