Turkey reiterated its position on Sweden and Finland joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
This was during telephone talks by Turkish Presidency Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin with German Chancellor’s Foreign Policy Advisor Jens Plötner, Swedish Foreign Ministry State Secretary Robert Rydberg, Finnish Presidential Advisor Petri Hakkarainen, UK National Security Advisor Stephen Lovegrove and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

The various exchanges focused on bilateral relations, the measures to be adopted to end the war in Ukraine through diplomacy and negotiation, threats related to food security, Sweden’s and Finland’s applications for membership in NATO as well as regional issues.
Regarding Sweden’s and Finland’s applications for NATO membership, Ibrahim Kalin told his interlocutors the need to take concrete measures to respond to Turkey’s national security concerns, telling them that the process will not progress until Turkey’s expectations are met.
The latter recalled that it is unacceptable to authorize the presence of members of the PKK/PYD/YPG and FETO terrorist organizations in member and non-member countries of NATO. He added that there should be no distinction between terrorist organizations and that all types of terrorism should be fought in the spirit of unity and solidarity.
Ibrahim Kalin also stressed Turkey’s principled position and expectations in lifting unjust export restrictions in the field of defense industry.
