Turin, unions and civil society in the streets to defend Mirafiori

Thousands gathered in Piazza Statuto to take part in the demonstration called by the metalworkers’ unions but open to the entire city. Turin therefore takes to the streets to defend its factory, Mirafiori, a symbol of the Italian automotive industry for 80 years. And it does so by bringing together representatives of workers, students, dioceses, the world of politics – strictly without flags – and institutions, up to entrepreneurs. At the head of the procession are the national secretariats of the metalworking unions, followed by the institutions, Municipality and Region, by the delegations of the related companies in crisis. Students and citizens queued.

Demonstrating for Mirafiori are the mayor of the city, Stefano Lo Russo, and the president of the Piedmont Region, Alberto Cirio. Twenty-four hours after the event, the letter also arrived from the Industrial Union of Turin and from all the employers’ associations, from traders to artisans, passing through the world of cooperation, which reiterated their full support for the “cause” of the car.

«Preserving and relaunching the Turin automotive district just as an epochal change in the mobility paradigm is taking place. This is the hope – write Unione Industriali Torino, CNA, API, Coldiretti, Confartigianato, Casartigiani, Lega Coop, Confcooperative, Ascom and Confesercenti – of the institutions and employers’ representatives who, in various capacities and with the specificities of each subject, are lined up in defense of the Stellantis plant in Mirafiori in the same hours in which the workers’ unions are preparing to take to the streets with the large demonstration they have called for April 12th.”

We need a response from the area, strong and unanimous, univocal and without labels, to reiterate the centrality of the automotive sector and its related industries for our community, they write in the open letter. «Turin has been the capital of the Italian automotive industry for over a century and can maintain a leading role in a rapidly technologically evolving world» they highlight. Counteracting Turin’s industrial decline is therefore a «common objective, of the entire territory, at the beyond the representative acronyms. It is everyone’s interest, no one excluded.”

It was the support for the Turin-Lyon TAV that brought the city together across the board in 2019, with an estimated 30,000 people taking to the streets to ask to move forward with high-speed rail without political hesitation. Today’s event goes in that same direction and focuses on the industrial issue and the importance of manufacturing and automotive for the development of the Turin area and the entire Piedmont, which hosts more than a third of the companies and employees of the sector.
