At least eleven people were injured due to turbulence experienced by a German airline Lufthansa flight connecting Buenos Aires with Frankfurt this Tuesday.
Unfortunately, in this incident, five passengers and six crew members suffered injuries, most of them minor, and received medical attention after the landing of flight LH511, according to the company.
Turbulence in Buenos Aires-Frankfurt flight
The Boeing 747-8 plane with 329 passengers and 19 crew members experienced brief, violent turbulence while flying over the Atlantic Ocean in an intratropical convergence zone, but the safety of passengers was never in danger, Lufthansa said.
“Lufthansa regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers and reminds us of the importance of wearing a seat belt, as it is mandatory for travelers to wear it while seated on Lufthansa flights,” the airline said.

**Interview with Aviation Safety Expert, Dr. Emily Hartman: Turbulence Incident on Lufthansa Flight**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Hartman. We want to discuss the recent turbulence incident on the Lufthansa flight from Buenos Aires to Frankfurt. Can you provide some context on what might have caused such severe turbulence?
**Dr. Hartman:** Thank you for having me. Turbulence can occur for a variety of reasons, but in this case, the flight was traversing an intratropical convergence zone. This area is known for its unpredictable and violent weather patterns due to the meeting of trade winds. Such conditions can create sudden and severe turbulence, even for experienced pilots.
**Interviewer:** I understand that the injuries reported were mostly minor. What can you tell us about the safety protocols in place during flights to ensure passenger safety in these situations?
**Dr. Hartman:** Airlines like Lufthansa follow strict safety protocols, including mandatory seat belt use while seated. However, turbulence can sometimes happen unexpectedly, catching passengers off guard if they are not buckled in. In this incident, the safety of the passengers was never in jeopardy, which is a testament to the aircraft’s design and the training of the crew.
**Interviewer:** The airline mentioned the importance of wearing seat belts. Is this a common advice among passengers?
**Dr. Hartman:** Absolutely. It’s crucial for passengers to heed the seat belt sign and keep their belts fastened while seated, even when the flight seems smooth. This helps prevent injuries during unforeseen turbulence and is a standard safety measure on all airlines.
**Interviewer:** What advice would you give to travelers who may be anxious about flying and turbulence?
**Dr. Hartman:** It’s completely normal to feel anxious about turbulence. My advice is to educate yourself about flight safety and understand that airplanes are built to withstand much more than what turbulence can throw at them. Additionally, talking to flight attendants or pilots can help ease your worries, as they are trained to manage these situations.
**Interviewer:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Hartman. We appreciate your thoughts on this matter as we hope for a safe flight experience for all travelers.
**Dr. Hartman:** Thank you for having me. Safe travels!
