One of the most pressing reasons to move to IPv6 is the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses. Its adoption provides a virtually unlimited number of addresses, which is essential to meet the growing needs for connectivity and, in this regard, prepare our country’s Internet infrastructure for the future, as the next generations of Technologies, such as 5G, rely heavily on IPv6 for optimal connectivity.

With the expansion of the Internet and the proliferation of connected devices, IPv4 addresses are quickly exhausted. The adoption of IPv6 will allow Tunisia to support the continued growth of the Internet by enabling the connection of more and more devices and users. This is particularly important in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), where many devices are connected to the Internet… In summary, the move to IPv6 is an important and essential step to ensure connectivity, security and Tunisia’s competitiveness on the Internet, on the one hand, and supporting the economic and technological development of the country, on the other hand.

This is, in a few words, the main observation made by the President and CEO of Tunisie Telecom, Lassâad Ben Dhiab, during an unprecedented event dedicated to the announcement of the migration of the historic operator to the IPv6 protocol.

Held under the slogan “IPv6 it’s time”—It’s time for IPv6—, the event was enhanced by the presence of the Minister of Communication Technologies, Nizar Ben Néji, guests from the world of technology and students.

TT, first operator to migrate to the IPv6 protocol

Ben Dhiab indicated that this inevitable transition to the IPv6 protocol is an opportunity to disseminate cutting-edge technologies and popularize access to a connected future. And as the first operator to migrate to the IPv6 protocol, a crucial step in the history of telecommunications has been reached today, in our country.

“For some time, Tunisie Telecom has implemented a strategy aimed at meeting the current and future needs of its customers to improve communication services in our country and bring them to a level compatible with international standards, at the time where we are seeing very significant developments in this sector all over the world,” he said.

On the figures side, the CEO of Tunisie Telecom affirmed that currently, the 4G network coverage rate stands at 98% while the coverage rate of the mobile telephone network reaches 97%. The objective is to reach a rate of 100% by the end of this year thanks in particular to the modernization of the entire mobile network to 4G which is ready for 5G. The operator has also deployed more than 50,000 km of optical fiber in the 24 governorates and all delegations to provide access to very high speed to all Tunisian homes.

400,000 TT customers use IPv6

According to Ben Dhiab, currently, 400,000 customers are already using the IPv6 protocol through Tunisie Telecom’s mobile network, with a goal of reaching 2,000,000 customers by the end of the current year.

“Since the launch of the historic operator, the future has been and will remain at the heart of our concerns. To do this, we continue to consider the establishment of an advanced infrastructure to achieve the objectives set and face future challenges. Today, by adopting IPv6, Tunisia is aligning itself with international standards with more and more services and content on the Internet, which will guarantee uninterrupted access to global services… This transition to IPv6 will also stimulate innovation and competitiveness in Tunisia, thus contributing to economic growth,” he further clarified.

A priority subject

For his part, Nizar Ben Néji indicated that this passage marks a crucial step in the development and modernization of our national digital infrastructure. According to the minister, IPv6 is much more than just a technological update. This is an essential transition for the future of this sector which will bring more flexibility, performance and above all security. Internationally, many countries have already accelerated the adoption of IPv6, such as India, Malaysia, France, Belgium and Germany. The first Arab country is Saudi Arabia (7e global position) while the leading African country is none other than Zimbabwe (62e global position).

“This is to say that the IPv6 adoption gap between countries is truly huge and our country has been slow to accelerate IPv6 adoption. Aware of this reality, the Ministry of Communication Technologies has taken the subject of IPv6 seriously and as a priority. And since then, we have set up a structure bringing together telecommunications operators, experts from the ministry, members of the National Telecommunications Authority, etc., which has met regularly to prepare and implement a plan for action. This effort and this fruitful collaboration between the ministry and the various players in the sector have borne fruit and today the official migration to IPv6 is announced. This is a perfect example of what we can achieve when we work together for the national interest,” he said.

Start of a new digital era

The minister added that with the exponential growth of connected objects and the multitude of digital use cases, the transition to IPv6 is becoming obvious given its ability to offer a virtually unlimited number of addresses, which is essential for meet the growing needs for connectivity in Tunisia and will open the way to new horizons and a world of innovation. “The adoption of IPv6 is an event that we have been waiting for a long time. It will mark the beginning of a new digital era, innovation and economic growth… Everyone is invited to join us in this transformation and migration to IPv6 to exploit the new opportunities offered by the world of telecommunications. Together, we will build a better digital future for our country and for future generations,” underlined Ben Néji.
