Tunisian President: We will not allow the presence of outlaws on our lands

Tunisia – Tunisian President Kais Saied confirmed on Friday that his country will not allow the presence of people outside the law on its territory.

Saeed stressed the need to put an end to the phenomenon of irregular migration.

This came during a meeting between Saied and Leon Kakou Adoum, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Côte d’Ivoire, at Carthage Palace, according to a statement by the Tunisian presidency.

The statement said that Saied “addressed the issue of irregular migration during the meeting.”

He recalled that his country “welcomes African brothers and is keen to treat them humanely, but it will not allow people outside the law to exist on its territory.”

He stressed the “need to adopt a comprehensive and consensual approach in the field of irregular migration to put an end to this phenomenon, eliminate its deep causes, and confront the criminal networks behind it that traffic in human beings and their organs.”

Saeed stressed his country’s pride in its “African affiliation and its keenness to further strengthen relations of brotherhood, cooperation and partnership with African countries within a bilateral and multilateral framework for the good and interest of the peoples of the continent.”

He expressed his “satisfaction with the level reached by Tunisian-Ivorian relations in many areas.”

Saeed called for “further strengthening and diversifying it, especially in the economic and commercial fields and in the sectors of higher education, scientific research, technology, culture and health.”

On an almost weekly basis, Tunisian authorities announce the thwarting of attempts at irregular migration to the shores of Europe and the arrest of hundreds of migrants, from Tunisia or other African countries.

The country is under increasing European pressure to exercise more control over its shores and prevent migrant boats from leaving.

Saied repeatedly stressed that his country “will not be a land for settling irregular migrants, and will work to ensure that it is not a transit point for them,” and called on “the countries of the northern Mediterranean to assume their responsibilities.”
