The Ministries of Agriculture and Commerce had announced, several days ago, a fixed price for olive oil in the face of soaring prices. It is now done: 2 million tonnes of bottles of olive oil will be supplied to Tunisian supermarkets from December 15, sold at the fixed price of 15 dinars per liter, or 4.50 euros. A way to counter high prices in an already tense context of shortages of other food products.

In the capital’s supermarkets, Friday evening, the first bottles to arrive on the shelves were sold within a few hours since the morning. A good initiative in the context of the current crisis, according to Tarek, 33 years old and manager of a café. “ I heard regarding it on the radio, on social networks. But until now, I haven’t seen this product in stores. I hope that with these new measures, we will find solutions to provide as many products as possible on the Tunisian market. » Tarek says he is in any case ready to buy a liter at 15 dinars instead of 24-25.

Internationally, the price of virgin olive oil has increased. An advantage for exporters, but less for the local market which suffers from an unregulated price increase. Fadhel, a 52-year-old tourist guide, fears that these government measures will not change much. “ I welcome the initiative, but for me, it will not succeed in the long term. Because as usual, there may be people who take advantage of it to make a profit. For example, farmers or resellers who risk mixing and cutting this oil with less good oil to avoid losing money. Setting such a price also has a negative impact on olive oil producers. »

The commercial director of the National Olive Oil Office, Moez Ben Amor called on consumers to avoid the frenzy to obtain this oil at a preferential price. A frenzy already visible in stores in recent months due to the lack of milk, rationed to two packs per person and shortages of sugar and coffee.
