The Tunisian Football Federation announced, on Friday, the appointment of Anis Bousaïdi and Montaser Al-Wahshi to lead the national team temporarily, until a new coach is hired, after the departure of Jalal Al-Qadiri following the early exit from the group stage in the African Cup of Nations.

The Tunisian Federation said in a statement on Facebook: “Today, the duties of the national coach, assistant coaches, and physical trainers for the senior national team were officially terminated as a result of poor performance, exit from the first round of the African Cup of Nations, and failure to achieve the agreed-upon contractual goals.”

He added: “It was decided to assign coaches Anis Al Busaidi and Montaser Al Wuhayshi to lead the national team until a new national coach is appointed.”

The Federation also decided to form a technical committee “that includes old international players who are recognized for their competence to propose the new national coach.”

Tunisia tied 0-0 with South Africa, placing it at the bottom of Group E with two points, after starting the tournament in Ivory Coast with a surprise loss from Namibia before drawing with Mali.

After the exit, Al-Qadri told the BeIN Sports network: “My contract with the Tunisian Football Federation ends automatically if we do not reach the semi-finals of the Nations Cup. This is my decision and this is my contract.”

Al-Qadiri took over as coach of Tunisia in January 2022, succeeding coach Munther Al-Kabir. Al-Qadri was Al-Kabir’s assistant in the previous edition of the tournament, in which the team exited in the quarter-finals with defeat against Burkina Faso.

Al-Qadri (52 years old) led Tunisia to reach the 2022 World Cup and beat France, the 2018 world champion, in the group stage.

He added about Tunisia’s early exit: “God decreed and did what He wanted. Our goal was clear. We wanted to reach the furthest point. At least to the semi-finals. I bear responsibility.”

Tunisia scored one goal in three matches, achieving its worst offensive record since 2002, when it left in the group stage without scoring a goal.

Tunisia exited the tournament in the group stage for the first time since 2013.
