Tunisian authorities announced Monday that they had recovered the bodies of five lifeless irregular migrants and rescued 663 others off the country’s central coast.

In a press release, the Tunisian National Guard reports the thwarting of 16 attempts at irregular immigration off the coast of the Sfax region, culminating in the rescue of 663 sub-Saharan migrants and the recovery of five bodies.

Epicenter of attempts to illegally cross the Mediterranean from the Tunisian coast, Sfax, Tunisia’s second city, has seen a significant increase in irregular immigration operations in recent days, following the improvement in climatic conditions.

According to the latest statistics from the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, an NGO specializing in the migration issue, some 690 Tunisian irregular migrants have reached the Italian coast illegally since the start of the current year.

In 2023, a total of 1,313 irregular migrants of different nationalities died and 1,793 others went missing off the coast of Tunisia, while trying to reach Europe clandestinely.

During the same period, more than 17,000 migrants including 4,000 minors arrived on the Italian coasts from Tunisia, a slight decrease of 4.5% compared to the year 2022, according to the NGO.
