Oh, overwhelming Arab joy, an Arabic-language tape competes in the official competition of the 76th Cannes International Film Festival, which will be held from 16 to 27 May next.
Banat Olfa – Les filles d’Olfa – by Tunisian director Kawthar Ben Hania, who turned with her penultimate film: “The Man Who Sold His Back” into an Arab hope for our access to the Oscars by reaching the final nomination for the Oscar for the best non-English-language foreign film. And she is here with another Tunisian name who sat on the throne of the two screens in Egypt: Hind Sabri, which means that we are facing a full guarantee of two important forces in front of and behind the camera in the lucky movie to compete for the Palme d’Or with a group of the great creators of international cinema.
It is a 100 percent golden opportunity, and a first coronation before winning any award as long as the film had the opportunity to confront artistically in the most important film festival in the world while its director, Kawthar Ben Haniyeh, holds the Medal of Culture and Arts from France 7 years ago, and chose to star in her film, her daughter, Hind Sabri, as the heroine of the film : “The Silence of the Palaces”, by the great late Moufida Talatli, who won the golden camera from the festival, and Hind had not yet exceeded the age of 15, so would her face be good for the Kawthar movie and would she have the honor of seizing the Golden Palm on the closing night of the festival on the 27th of this month ?!
The overwhelming joy in the Tunisian cinematic circles was expressed by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in “a statement of congratulations to the work team on this important nomination, wishing more success so that it will be crowned at the Cannes Festival and in the rest of its upcoming participation.” While the artist, Hind, described the event as “a beautiful and important day in the history of Tunisian cinema.”
The Arabs also attend this session through a number of films in a demonstration competition: A Look, which is second in importance following the official competition, via: “Goodbye Julia” by the Sudanese Mohamed Kordofani, “The Mother of All Lies” by the Moroccan Asmaa Al-Mudair, “Hounds” by the Moroccan Kamal Lazraq, “Omar of Strawberry” by Elias Belkader, and: “A Brand of Fire” by Karim Ainouz, and the two films are Algerian, the first in midnight screenings, and the second in: A Look.
It remains to wait for the result of the competition before a jury headed by Swedish director Robin Astlund. We are optimistic.
