As the head of the studio writes:

“In 2018, while preparing for their exhibition in the Slampes Palace of Culture, the longest-standing members of the Tukuma studio united under the name “Bohemians”, which describes not only the desire to emulate the greats of classical art history, but also their lifestyle in many ways. This is not regarding a misunderstood explanation of this word, but regarding devotion to art with all its essence.”

And so the painters of this group – Ingemāra Treija, Ilze Cērpiņa, Ivonna Bredovska, Mārīte Saulīte, Viola Zaltāne, Zane Siliņa, Gunta Pelīte, Liene Ratniece, Marita Andrus, Linda Brence, Marika Vītola decided to paint following the war in order to express themselves with their artworks. solidarity with Ukrainian women. Symbolically depicting the ‘beauty and strength’ of Ukrainian women in their works. The group’s works were exhibited several times in Tukum at solidarity events in support of Ukraine, they were also seen and highly appreciated by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia, Oleksandrs Mishchenko.

When I showed the photos of these paintings to the director of the local photo museum, Roman Metelski, in Lviv, he immediately said – ‘I want to exhibit these paintings in my museum.’ By this time, Tukuma artists had already painted the ‘power and beauty’ of Latvian women… This is how the second part of the exhibition was created – a total of 20 paintings.

Today, with the opening of the exhibition in Lviv, Roman’s idea is being realized, albeit in a somewhat peculiar way. In Tukum, Agris Jansons photographed all the works of art, but Romāns found an opportunity to make high-quality reproductions of the works of art in Lviv in the original size. This made it possible to overcome the difficulties of transporting paintings, as well as the obstacles of crossing borders. It is expected that the exhibition will also be shown elsewhere in Ukraine. Photo reproductions of several paintings have also been made in the form of photo cards, which those interested will be able to obtain for a donation to the Ukrainian army.

Creation of an exhibition of reproductions of Tukuma art studio ‘Krāsmutes’ ‘Latvietes. Ukrainian women. Love. Peace’ was also supported by the Honorary Consul of Latvia in Lviv, Volodimirs Harsula.

Ingemar Trey:

“The works, which were created in the winter of 2022 and continue to be created in the studio “Krāsmute”, are the words of our art language regarding a woman who was thrown into a cruel whirlpool of war events. The paintings speak of a woman’s strength and endurance, of the love that comes with us, that unites Ukrainians, Latvians and all peace-keeping forces.

Ivonna Bredovska: “Why am I painting a Ukrainian woman? When the war in Ukraine was announced, I imagined what it would be like if it happened to our country Latvia. Love and life are inseparable concepts. A woman must be strong for everything she loves – her country, nation, family. You must be mentally steadfast and confident. With the light of your soul, beauty should be inspiring. Art is already the way for us to remember that we are connected to the divine. It is the miracle of life and also the fragility. Death, life and love are the inseparable trinity. A woman should be able to help protect life and love on earth.”

Everyone who has already seen the works in Lviv appreciates this gesture of solidarity of Tukuma artists. On the other hand, the symbolic portraits of Latvian women in folk costumes demonstrate the national colorfulness and spiritual richness of our nation in a symbolic way.
