The airline TUI, one of the most prominent in terms of vacation travel on the Old Continent, will no longer fly to the Cuban resort of Varadero, from Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, because there is no demand, there are no passengers to fill the flights. planes to the Caribbean island.
The TUI company announced, through local media, the cancellation of its flights from Schiphol, Amsterdam’s airport, to Varadero since mid-May. This was confirmed by a spokesperson for the tour operator, who also added that given the low demand to the Cuba destination, flights from Belgium would also be canceled later. In other words, TUI would no longer fly to Varadero, at least for the moment.
“Travellers who have already booked a trip (following mid-May) will be informed personally by TUI or the travel agency where they made the reservation,” the spokeswoman said.
Flights to Varadero will also be canceled next winter season, and there are still no concrete plans to return to this destination in the future. TUI had already canceled its flights to Varadero from Manchester, England.
TUI will not fly to Varadero. There is no return date
This cancellation will affect flights scheduled from mid-May of this year. Affected passengers will be informed and offered the possibility of being rebooked on other flights or receiving a full refund. The cancellation of flights to Varadero adds to other similar measures that TUI has taken in recent months.
The low demand for Cuba is due to several factors, such as the economic crisis that the country is going through, the political situation and the travel restrictions imposed by some countries. The latter, according to the TUI spokesperson, is the one that most affects European tourists.
“One of the reasons Cuba is no longer so popular with the Dutch and Belgians is that the United States eliminated the visa exemption for travelers who have been there. Anyone who goes on vacation to the island will no longer be able to travel to the US with an ESTA, but must go to the US consulate to obtain a visa. That takes much longer and is more expensive,” they stated from the Dutch media.
This situation is having a negative impact on the Cuban tourism sector, which largely depends on foreign visitors.
