A tugboat sank in the Suez Canal after colliding with a liquid gas tanker. A seaman died, as his relatives announced on Saturday. The canal authority said the six other crew members had been taken to a clinic. The passage through one of the most important waterways in the world was only temporarily affected, according to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), everything went back to normal from midnight.

It was initially unclear what the consequences of the incident would be for traffic in the Suez Canal. In the evening, the authorities said that the passage of ships coming through the canal from the north had not been affected. Ships coming from the south were no longer affected after midnight. Around 15 percent of world trade goes through the Suez Canal in Egypt.

In the spring of 2021, one of the world’s largest container freighters, the “Ever Given”, crossed the Suez Canal and blocked it for almost a week. Hundreds of ships were unable to navigate the waterway as a result, and global supply chains were severely disrupted.
