Through the ‘Ori Tahiti, Tuarii, crowned best dancer in Heiva, promotes his Polynesian culture throughout the world. Today, he is moving towards another form of art, theater, where his mastery of dance is a real asset. Tuarii Tracqui is a young Polynesian aged 28. Although he is known in Tahiti as a dancer of ‘Ori Tahiti, this multi-talented artist has also been passionate regarding theater and audiovisual for several years.

Ori is the most practiced dance form in Polynesia. Every year, in July in Tahiti, the Heiva in Tahiti, a prestigious event which highlights the dance and music of the Polynesian Islands. This artistic competition brings together the best dancers in the archipelago. The men’s movements differ from those of the women, revealing two very distinct choreographic styles.

Encouraged by his mother, Tuarii participated in his first Heiva in 2007, at the age of 17. Only 5 years later, in 2012, he was crowned best dancer with the troupe Hitireva de Kehaulani Chanquy.

Winning the ‘Ori Tahiti changed everything, it was my ultimate dream!

From then on, everything happened very quickly. He is approached by Winston Rosas, a Mexican promoter, who offers to teach dance in Mexico. Then came the turn of the United States, France and Japan.

A family passion

Tuarii’s mother and grandfather were great figures in traditional Polynesian dance. His mother Manouche Lehartel is a dancer and choreographer, it was she who introduced him to this ancestral dance.

As a dancer of ‘Ori Tahiti, while being extremely virile, he has a grace and precision in gesture that no dancer possesses.

For artistic advice, Tuarii can always count on his mother’s pedagogy.

Today, Tuarri is opening up to other forms of art. From now on, he is leaning towards comedy and theater where dancing is a real asset. He combines these two practices with undisguised delight.

I wanted to see something else, to broaden my experience. Theater is complementary to dance.

Au Small theater from Tahiti, Tuarii meets the famous actor Tepa Teuru to rehearse a new play. Dancing helps her move on stage. The directors who work with him include dance scenes because they know the talents of this audience lover.
