RICHARDSON, Texas, Nov. 16, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Mavenir, the cloud-native network infrastructure provider that is creating the future of networking, announced its transformative partnership with Tū Ātea Limited, an Indigenous Aotearoa/New Zealand company dedicated to the advancement of Maori telecommunications. Through this collaboration, Tū Ātea will deploy Mavenir’s next-generation 5G Converged Packet Networks and Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN) using Māori-owned spectrum assets. The partnership will drive the development of 4G and 5G private small cell networks and infrastructure sharing across Aotearoa.
By facilitating neutral hosting, Tū Ātea and Mavenir provide New Zealand network operators with cost-effective, shared infrastructure options to expand Aotearoa coverage to underserved communities.
Tū Ātea’s broader mission includes training and employment initiatives, and the establishment of an Innovation Center to promote research, development and prototyping for Māori in advanced wireless technologies.
Following Tū Ātea’s acquisition of Broadtech Group in December 2023, this milestone represents another step towards establishing Māori leadership in telecommunications. Through this subsidiary, now called Tū Ātea Network Services, Tū Ātea will design, build and operate an open standard software-defined private network for mobile services, extending critical coverage.
“We are collaborating with existing Mobile Network Operators, providing shared network infrastructure that extends 4G and 5G coverage to underserved areas,” said Antony Royal, CEO of Tū Ātea. “This partnership empowers Māori to drive low-cost network sharing technology solutions, particularly in rural areas.”
Using Mavenir’s technology, Tū Ātea aims to provide affordable services that meet the growing connectivity needs in Aotearoa. This Maori-led initiative introduces scalable private 5G networks for sectors such as primary production, manufacturing and critical infrastructure. “Partnering with Tū Ātea offers Mavenir a unique opportunity to support a Māori-led initiative that is pioneering the future of network services,” said Pardeep Kohli, CEO of Mavenir. “Our cloud-native solutions lay the foundation for impactful digital transformation, opening up new possibilities for industries and communities.”
Antony Royal highlights that this partnership with Mavenir is part of a larger program that includes employment and training initiatives in the telecommunications sector. Tū Ātea is also establishing an Innovation Hub to drive research, testing and commercial development for Māori using 5G and wireless technologies, supporting ideas and initiatives that strengthen Māori technical and commercial capabilities.
This collaboration sets the stage for a new era of networked services and innovation, empowering Māori, further unlocking the economic potential of remote communities and enhancing New Zealand’s digital future.

How will Tū Ātea ensure that the benefits of improved connectivity reach the Māori communities effectively?
**Interview with Antony Royal, CEO of Tū Ātea Limited**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Antony. Your partnership with Mavenir marks a significant milestone for Tū Ātea. Could you elaborate on the vision behind this collaboration?
**Antony Royal:** Absolutely. Our primary vision is to empower Māori communities in Aotearoa by providing access to advanced telecommunications services. By partnering with Mavenir, we’re able to leverage their cloud-native technology and open radio access network solutions to build infrastructure that extends 4G and 5G coverage to underserved areas. This is about more than just technology; it’s about connecting communities and enhancing opportunities in rural regions.
**Interviewer:** That sounds remarkable! Can you explain how this partnership will specifically benefit underserved communities in New Zealand?
**Antony Royal:** Definitely. By facilitating neutral hosting, we’re allowing multiple mobile network operators to share infrastructure, which dramatically reduces costs and helps us to expand coverage more efficiently. This means that communities that have been traditionally left out of modern connectivity can gain access to crucial services. Moreover, with our focus on Māori-owned spectrum assets, we’re ensuring that the benefits stay within the community.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned training and employment initiatives. How does Tū Ātea plan to foster local talent within the telecommunications sector?
**Antony Royal:** Our broader mission includes establishing an Innovation Center dedicated to research and development in wireless technologies. This center will not only focus on technological advancement but also on job training and creating employment pathways for local Māori. By equipping our people with the skills needed for the future of telecommunications, we’re fostering sustainable economic growth in these communities.
**Interviewer:** It seems like there’s a strong emphasis on sustainable and scalable solutions. How do you envision the role of private 5G networks in sectors like manufacturing and primary production?
**Antony Royal:** Private 5G networks can revolutionize many industries by providing secure, high-speed connectivity. For sectors like manufacturing, we envision enhanced operational efficiencies through automation and real-time data access. In primary production, farmers can use these networks for precision agriculture, benefiting from improved connectivity for IoT devices. This will not only increase productivity but also boost innovation across various sectors.
**Interviewer:** This partnership with Mavenir appears to be a game-changer not just for Tū Ātea, but for New Zealand as a whole. What are your hopes for the future of this initiative?
**Antony Royal:** My hope is that this collaboration serves as a model for Indigenous-led initiatives worldwide. We’re unlocking the economic potential of remote communities and enhancing New Zealand’s digital future. I believe that empowering local leaders and innovators will drive sustainable development and improve the overall quality of life for our people.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Antony, for sharing these insights. It’s truly inspiring to see technology being used to create positive change in communities.
**Antony Royal:** Thank you for having me. We’re excited about the future and the role we can play in it!
