70.8 billion dirhams of export turnover in 2020 for companies in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima (TTA) Region! This is one of the main data to remember from the report just published by the Moroccan Observatory of VSMEs on the entrepreneurial fabric of this region of northern Morocco.
However, these statistics show a drop of 14% compared to the previous year. Should we see in this the covid-19 effect which has long complicated export processes and seized up supply and logistics supply chains? In any case, still according to the same report, the added value of companies declared at the level of the TTA Region also fell by 9.2%, peaking at 29.9 billion dirhams.

In its study, the Moroccan Observatory of the TPME does not deliver conclusions and does not really make comments on the data collected, but the analyzes reveal that the number of EPMA (Enterprises active legal persons) having filed a declaration with the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI) in 2020, amounted to 35,126, up 6.6% compared to the previous year.
Similarly, these EPMAs generated cumulative revenue of 147.3 billion dirhams in 2020, up 10.4%. Other important indicators to remember from this report on the entrepreneurial fabric in the northern part of Morocco is that some 7,344 legal entity companies were created there in 2021, showing an increase of 18.8% compared to the year 2020. At the same time, this region saw an increase of 699 of the same type of businesses being dissolved for the same period.
Tangier-Assilah: employment area
Regarding the employment component, in particular those declared to the CNSS, the Moroccan Observatory of the TPME notes that the TTA Region generated 468,975 jobs in 2021, an increase of almost 5% compared to 2020. The provincial analysis shows, as for it, that the prefecture of Tangier-Assilah concentrates 74.6% of the workforce for the same year.
In addition, “the analysis by province of the indicators of access to bank financing by the EPMAs in 2021 shows that 87.6% of the total outstanding loans are concentrated in the prefecture of Tangier-Assilah, which lists 70.7 % of the workforce of the companies studied”, notes the Observatory. Regarding the evolution of financial indicators, the analysis of the balance sheets of a sample of 3,415 EPMAs indicates that their cash position, in 2020, remained overall at the same level as in 2019.
Female entrepreneurship
On the other hand, the balance sheet data of microenterprises and very small enterprises (VSEs) show that the debt with the partners constitutes the first component of their financial resources during the same period, representing respective shares of 52.3% and 39% .7%. Finally, with regard to female entrepreneurship, the results of the study show that in the province of Fahs-Anjra, 20% of businesses are run by women, i.e. a level higher than the national average which is 16, 2%. This share is limited to 16% in the prefecture of Tangier-Assilah.
VSMEs represent 76.6% of the workforce declared to the CNSS
Very small, small and medium-sized enterprises (TPME), achieving less than 175 MDH in turnover, employ 76.6% of the workforce declared to the CNSS in 2021, according to the report of the Observatory on TPME. In addition, those whose seniority is over 5 years generate 54.2% of total declared jobs. The “Manufacturing industry” sector is the main contributor to employment in the prefecture of Tangier-Assilah in 2021, representing a share of 47.2%.
On the other hand, in the provinces of Larache and Chefchaouen, “Agriculture, forestry and fishing” occupies this place, with respective shares of 46.3% and 46% in 2021. region amounts to 16.1 billion dirhams, nearly 44% of which is accounted for by companies employing more than 500 employees.
