München – TSV 1860 did themselves no favors with this expression of condolence: On Monday it was announced that Franz Beckenbauer had died at the age of 78. Shortly following the news became known, the Lions commented on their social media channels (even before FC Bayern) and expressed their condolences – but made a nasty faux pas in a half-sentence.
“Even if he played for the wrong club, he was still a true Giesinger. The fact that he didn’t start his world career with the sixties was due to a mistake in a youth game,” it said. The fact that, as part of an expression of condolence, you let yourself be carried away by a dig at rivals FC Bayern and wrote regarding the “wrong club” was not well received by the followers at all. The result was a real shitstorm.

TSV 1860 fans angry following Beckenbauer post: “What a disgusting comment”
“Dumbest comment today: ‘even if he played for the wrong club’. I would say separated in the colors, united in the matter. Rest in peace, Kaiser!” raged one user. “What a disgusting comment. It’s no wonder you’re forever buried in the no-man’s land of German football,” another fumed: “Incredibly irreverent to use your tone like that.”

For another follower, the post fit only too well into the chaotic picture that the Lions have given off on and off the pitch in recent weeks: “So now I’m used to incompetence and embarrassment from my club… but the beginning of this expression of condolence ‘ Shoot the bird! If you’re looking so jealously at the Säbeners on this sad occasion, then you’d better take a look at how a club is run properly and with expertise!”

Franz Beckenbauer was a life member of TSV 1860
After all: The social media department responded to the critical comments and removed the first part from the post; in the updated version, Beckenbauer is only referred to as a “real Giesinger”. In fact, the FC Bayern club legend also had a connection to the Lions, of which he had even been a life member since November 1998.
Legendary to this day: The wads that Beckenbauer received from the then 1860 player Gerhard König in 1958. This made him refrain from moving from SC 1906 to the Lions and prompted him to move to Bayern.
