An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit southwestern Japan today (Thursday) and triggered a tsunami warning, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. However, there were no immediate signs of major damage.

There were no reports of abnormalities in nuclear power plants following the earthquake and the government is inspecting damages and casualties, Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters.
The earthquake struck at around 4:43 p.m. (Japan time) near Miyazaki Prefecture on the large western island of Kyushu, the JMA said. Waves about half a meter high were observed in the Miyazaki area, Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) said.
