Tsunami on the coast of Japan surprises with waves of half a meter

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Thursday, triggering a tsunami on the coasts of Japan causing waves of up to half a metre, leaving at least two people slightly injured, while authorities continue to assess personal and material damage.

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck at 16:43 local time (7:43 GMT) today at a depth of 30 kilometres in the Hyuga Sea off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu, Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami warning of up to one metre in areas close to the epicentre.

The first waves of the tsunami were recorded at 17:01 (08:01 GMT) in the port of Nichinan, opposite the epicentre, reaching 20 centimetres, and later reached 40 cm in the port of Aburatsu, in the same city.

The highest tsunami, measuring half a metre, was recorded in the port of Miyazaki, and other tsunamis of 30 centimetres were recorded in the city of Tosashimizu, Kochi Prefecture, on the neighbouring island of Shikoku; in the port of Shibushi, in Kagoshima (Kyushu) and in the city of Minamiosumi, in the same province, among other locations, without any reports of damage due to the phenomenon so far.

About three hours after the earthquake, the tsunami warning was cancelled in the affected areas, except in Miyazaki, where significant changes in the tide were still observed.

The quake measured an intensity of 6 or below on Japan’s 7-step seismic scale in eastern Kagoshima, indicating considerable surface shaking and significant destructive potential, while in neighboring Kagoshima the quake measured an intensity of 5 or below.

A rock slide and fallen power poles were reported in Nichinan, forcing traffic to be regulated on some roads.

Due to the earthquake, local trains have been suspended in Miyazaki and Kagoshima, and sections of highways in the area have been closed for inspection.
