[Sing Tao Daily report]The Centre for Food Safety announced today that a fried rice sample was found to contain excessive amounts of Bacillus cereus, and the Centre is following up on the incident.

Through the Routine Food Monitoring Programme, the CFS collected the above fried rice samples for testing from Lung Mun Yip. The results showed that the sample contained 150 Bacillus cereus per gram. According to the “Guidelines for Microbiological Content in Foods”, ready-to-eat food containing more than 10 Bacillus cereus per gram is considered unsatisfactory.

The CFS has notified the restaurants concerned of the above-mentioned violations and instructed them to suspend the sale of the relevant food products. The CFS has also dispatched staff to inspect the restaurant, educate the restaurant owner and staff on food safety and hygiene, and request the restaurant to review and improve production processes and conduct thorough cleaning and disinfection.

The center means that Bacillus cereus is ubiquitous in the environment. Lack of hygiene in the preparation or storage of food may lead to the proliferation of the bacteria. Eating foods containing excessive amounts of Bacillus cereus or its heat-resistant toxins may cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as vomiting and diarrhea.
