TSMC’s US factory has its opening postponed to 2025

Announced in 2020, the factory of TSMC in the US state of Arizona it should take a little longer than expected to start its activities. After admitting at the end of June that the works were significantly behind schedule, the Taiwanese company said today that the facility will only start producing chips in the early 2025and no longer at the end of 2024.

According to the president of TSMC, Mark Liu, this delay was caused by a shortage of the skilled labor needed to move the equipment used to manufacture the chips into the factory. The idea, according to him, is that the installation has some of the most advanced tools in the world for this purpose.

As we commented last December, it is expected that ⅓ of all chips produced in this factory will be destined for Apple, which, in turn, will use them in some of its older devices. The prediction is that TSMC will use the facility to produce, at first, chips for 4 nanometers.

That news also delayed the factory’s test production, originally scheduled to take place sometime in September. Now, according to Liu, this phase should only start between February and March next year.

Second information from Wall Street Journal, TSMC is said to be planning to temporarily bring more technically savvy employees from its factories in Taiwan to help at the Arizona factory. The company is also awaiting a final offer from the US government related to subsidies and tax credits, considered essential to cover the expenses with the installation in the US state.

The construction of the factory has great support from the Joe Biden government which, through the so-called CHIPS Act, aims to make the US once once more a major global center for chip manufacturing. Apple itself, it is worth noting, made lobby for TSMC to be included in the government’s plans.
