Tsitsipas Upset by Eubanks in Wimbledon: A Shocking Defeat for the Greek Flame

And the Greek flame went out… Already battered in the first two rounds of Wimbledon where he had to fight in 5 sets, Stefanos Tsitsipas was surprised this time by Christopher Eubanks (43rd at ATP) in the eighth final (3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4), Monday. Despite a smooth start to the match, the Greek gave in to the tie-break of the second set before the game really turned in the 4th set in favor of the American, who will challenge Daniil Medvedev in the next round.

Murray, the defeat that hurts: “It’s going to take me a while to digest it”

Stefanos Tsitsipas is having a hard time. Even when everything seems to be going well, the Greek is overtaken by who knows what force which pushes him to give in at key moments. Much less at fault than his opponent and leading in almost all statistical categories, Tsitsipas failed on the only small chances of taking the lead from Eubanks. At 27, the American qualified for his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Everything turned during the 4th set. While Stefanos Tsitsipas seemed to have mastered his subject, having so far conceded no break point despite losing the second set, the Greek left the door ajar for the first time at 3-3. Eubanks then jumped at the chance to get a first break point in this match. Unfortunately for him, it was saved by a very good passing from Tsitsipas.

An opportunity not converted therefore, but which would call for others… Two games later, once more. But this time, the Greek cracked for the first time in the game. As if his old demons had resurfaced. A double fault and Tsitsipas offered the break and even the set to his opponent, a big smile on his face.

The 5th round turned directly in favor of the American with a break from the Greek’s first service game. Haranguing the crowd, won over to his cause, Eubanks no longer seemed to make any errors on his opponent’s service even though he was going to be broken before regaining the advantage two games later. If his hand shook two points from the match on a ready-made forehand, Christopher Eubanks still concluded his formidable epic. Which will therefore be extended one more lap.
