After the so-called ‘urine terror’ that occurred at the Tsingtao Beer Factory in China, beer sales plummeted and importer Beer K is conducting voluntary retirement.

According to the liquor industry on the 15th, Beer K is receiving voluntary retirement following the recent recommendation of resignation of some employees. It is known that for a total of 120 employees, differential compensation will be provided depending on the number of years of service.

On the 20th of last month, an image of a man wearing work clothes urinating in a storage facility for malt, a raw material for beer, at a factory in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China, became known through social media (SNS), and subsequently spread rapidly online.

Beer K explained that the factory is making products for domestic use, not for export. However, the man’s actions caused distrust in the Tsingtao beer brand itself, and despite the explanation that there was no problem with the beer sold domestically, Tsingtao beer consumption plummeted.

It is reported that sales volume at most outlets, including convenience stores, has fallen by half.

Regarding the voluntary retirement process, Beer K said, “We have no choice but to tighten management due to the recent sharp decline in sales,” and added, “This is a decision for the survival of the company.”
