Clarifications for the upgrade of old POS devices that cannot technically be connected to the cash registers were given by Homeros Tsapalos, press representative of the Ministry of Finance, through the First Program 91.6 and 105.8.
This morning (26.2.2024), Mr. Tsapalos pointed out, the fourth cycle of subsidy through vouchers, part of the cost of purchasing a POS and also its connection with the cash registers, was opened. Anyone who has not received this voucher can enter the “Digital Transactions” platform, apply and benefit, covering a very large part of the cost of this purchase.
“They definitely need to talk to their providers (including the professionals) and the providers to replace these terminals. And this thing must be done in time in order for them to be compatible with the cash registers and then for the interconnection to proceed” said Mr. Tsapalos, noting that a very large part of the cost was covered and is covered by the voucher that exists and was used over 160,000 businesses.
“The interconnection must be done within the schedules. Currently the closing date is February 29th. The whole market knows it, the providers of POS and cash registers know it, and the debtors all over Greece know that those who have not done so should hurry up, make an appointment with an installation technician and come to their store in order to to interconnect the systems.
There are some exceptions. A large category of businesses are the so-called seasonal businesses and there are several thousand throughout Greece. They will need to have their systems interconnected a day before they even open. They are therefore not covered by this deadline which ends on Thursday 29th February, they will be able to do so later. This is one class.
The other category of businesses are those that fall under the 35 retail sectors that a few weeks ago we announced the installation obligation. These businesses have until the end of the month to even order the POS within March. Essentially, they gain an extra month,” said Mr. Tsapalos as to whether there is a possibility of extending the deadline set by the ministry.
Asked whether the remaining time is sufficient given the number of technicians available for the professionals to meet the deadlines, Mr. Tsapalos stated the following. “Based on the data we have and which is valid, the technicians are around 1,200 and of course they have already done a lot of work, they didn’t start yesterday, thousands of appointments have been booked and carried out and they intend to do even more in the coming days.
What I want to say and reassure the listeners who are some of these shopkeepers who are anxious to connect their systems and possibly not be able to find a technician to be told by a technician that he is not available, is that under no circumstances will charge those people some fine if those people want to connect their systems and their technician doesn’t make it.”
According to newsit, in any case, Mr. Tsapalos pointed out that “certainly there should be some leniency” as it is the biggest project currently underway, a synergy between the public and the private sector.
“We are talking regarding 300,000 businesses, dozens of POS providers and cashiers who all have to work as a chain and complete the project within the schedules. It makes sense that there should be a tolerance in the first few days, I’m not talking regarding an extension, I’m talking regarding a tolerance in terms of the imposition of fines. We don’t want to collect money from fines. We want to finally put the reform into practice, a reform that has been delayed for many years,” emphasized Mr. Tsapalos.
He noted that the fines for the professionals, the debtors, range from 10,000 euros in cases of businesses with a simple system and to 20,000 euros in cases of businesses with a double system, while for providers, those companies that actually provide the POS and cash registers, the fines are tenfold, from 200,000 euros and can reach up to 400,000 euros, even in the removal of the certification for the use of these terminals, so they go out of the market.
“11 different regulatory and legislative procedures have been completed by the Ministry and by the AADE. The whole market knew this project was going to happen. Therefore, every time we see, if we see, any unjustified delay on the part of the companies, the first thing we will do is to call them for explanations and the second, in case of non-compliance, is to impose the corresponding fines” concluded the press representative of the Ministry Finance.
