TS-LKD presidential candidates will decide whether to participate in the elections by next Wednesday

“It has been decided that (candidates – BNS) answers are expected until the evening of October 4, at 5:00 p.m.,” TS-LKD executive secretary Martynas Prievelis told BNS on Thursday.

As the party announced on Monday, TS-LKD branches mainly proposed Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyta, party chairman, Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielis Landsbergiis and deputy chairman, Minister of Social Security and Labor Monika Navickieni as candidates for the presidency.

Also, more than half of the party’s branches offered the chairman of the Seimas National Security and Defense Committee Laurynas Kasčiūnas, the Minister of National Defense Arvydas Anušauskas, the Deputy Speaker of the Seimas Pauliis Saudargas to run in the presidential elections.

According to party data, I. Šimonytė’s candidacy was proposed 66 times, G. Landsbergis – 64, M. Navickienė – 62, L. Kasčiūnas – 54, A. Anušauskas – 42, P. Saudargos – 41 times.

On November 11 and 12 this year, TS-LKD will organize open primaries of candidates for the presidential elections and ranking of the list of the European Parliament. Members of the party and its supporters will be able to vote in them.

Presidential elections in Lithuania will be held in the spring of 2024. According to public opinion polls, the current president Gitanas Nausėda is the clearest favorite among them, among the most popular mentioned candidates are Ignas Vėgėlė and Prime Minister I.Šimonytė.

G. Nausėda and I. Vēgėlė promise to announce their decisions on participation in the elections later this year.

The Union of Lithuanian Peasants and Greens is nominating the former Minister of Health Protection, Member of the Seimas, Aurelijas Verygas, the Mayor of Kazlų Rūda, Mantas Varaška, has announced his candidacy, and he is supported by the Party of Regions of Lithuania.
