Trump’s Indictment Hearing in Atlanta: The Impact on American Politics and the Judicial System

Trump will not appear in court for the indictment hearing in Atlanta next week. Even so, American citizens, and more importantly, voters, may still have ample opportunity to see the former President in court. Unless the Georgia state trial is moved to federal court, it is scheduled to be broadcast live.

That would be a delicate matter not only for the legal process, but also for American politics. Threatening or influencing witnesses would be made easier, and Trump would gain another stage to spread his saga of the stolen election and politicized justice nationwide mugshot shown.

A constitutional state like the United States must also prosecute potential criminal offenses when high-ranking politicians are accused. In this case, however, the judicial system is supposed to do something that politics and society are no longer capable of: setting up and enforcing a benchmark for what is permissible in the country.
