Trump’s former lawyer Giuliani turns himself in in Georgia

Georgia authorities released former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani on $150,000 bail Wednesday, following his arrest on charges of helping former President Donald Trump overturn the results of the 2020 elections in the southern state.

Giuliani, 79, who served as Trump’s personal attorney during his tenure, is being held at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, according to prison records.

Trump is expected to surrender himself in this prison Thursday, following a series of accusations were filed once morest him, including seeking to influence the 2020 presidential election, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden.

The judge set bail for Trump, 77, at $200,000, and he and 18 other defendants were granted until Friday noon (16:00 GMT) to turn themselves in to the Georgia authorities. At least nine of them have turned themselves in so far.

Sidney Powell, a Trump campaign lawyer and conspiracy theorist regarding rigged voting machines, was among those who turned themselves in on Wednesday before being released on $100,000 bail.

Defendant Mark Meadows, Trump’s chief of staff, asked Fulton County Attorney General Fanny Willis to extend his deadline while he sought to transfer the case from Georgia to federal court, but his request was denied.

Speaking to reporters following his release, Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor, said, “The indictment is a farce.”

He added, “It is not an attack on me and not only on President Trump (…) This is an attack on the American people.”

“American history will record that Fannie Willis launched the worst attack on the US Constitution ever when this case is dismissed,” he added.

Giuliani served as mayor of New York between 1994 and 2001, leading the city during the September 11 attacks, and has worked as a legal advisor to Trump in recent years.

Willis, the district attorney, asked the judge to set a trial date for Trump and the co-defendants for March 4 next year.

In addition to Florida, as he continues his campaign to return to the White House, Trump faces other criminal trials in New York for allegedly buying the silence of a porn star, in Florida for mishandling classified government documents, and in Washington for conspiring to overturn his loss in the 2020 election.

Taking a photo of Trump during his arrest was not mandatory in the three previous cases this year, but Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labatt told reporters earlier this month that it was standard procedure at his Fulton jail.
