James Vance, Republican candidate to the Vice Presidency of the United States (US), assured that the mass deportation of undocumented people, proposed by former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), should begin with one million immigrants.
“Let’s start with a million, and we can go from there,” said the senator from the state of Ohio in an interview for the program This Week of the chain ABC on August 11th.
Asked about the ability to carry out the plan, Vance stressed that he and Trump would take a “sequential approach” to addressing these deportations.
“We have to start with what we can achieve. I think that if we deport a lot of violent criminals and, frankly, if we make it harder to hire illegal labor, which reduces the wages of American workers, we will go a long way toward solving the problem of illegal immigration,” he stressed.
Vance said he is “extremely confident” that he and Trump can win the election in November 2024, even though polls have shown momentum for the candidacy of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
These statements are in line with what Trump said in May, during an interview with the American magazine Timewhen he said he would deport between 15 and 20 million people, and that he would use the National Guard to do so.
Trump’s proposal has drawn criticism from human rights and migrant advocates due to the large number that Republicans are handling, which exceeds the data provided by the Pew Research Center in 2022, when it estimated that there were 11 million undocumented people in the country.
Vance’s critical stance on migration
Vance has been critical of immigration in the United States. Since 2016, he has said that he sees the arrival of foreign workers as a threat to the American labor market.
“Migration brings cheap labor into the country, which puts pressure on a whole range of services, from hospitality to housing,” he said in an interview with the newspaper. The New York Times published in May 2024.
Since entering the Capitol as a senator in 2023, Vance has promoted several bills to limit the entry of migrants into the country, as well as impose criminal consequences on people living in the US illegally.
The proposals included requiring people who want to enter the United States with a temporary visa to pay between $5,000 and $10,000 as a “bail,” imposing a national system of legal status verification so that no company can hire undocumented people, or limiting the use of a humanitarian permit to enter the country.
Trump’s immigration proposal
In February 2024, Donald Trump made it clear that, if he returns to the White House, his immigration policy will go beyond the creation of the border wall that catapulted him to the presidency in 2016.
At several of his campaign rallies, he has adopted strong anti-immigrant rhetoric, claiming that foreigners “poison” the blood of the United States.
His proposals include mass deportation, the creation of “giant” detention centers for migrants, and he does not rule out the possibility of separating families who arrive at the border.
These protests were criticized by Joe Biden’s government, which called Trump “criminalizing Latinos for his political benefit.”
