Trump’s campaign apparatus has been hacked

Trump’s campaign apparatus has been hacked

The statement from Trump’s campaign staff came Saturday, shortly after the news website Politico reported that it received emails on July 22 from an anonymous source who identified himself only as “Robert” offering genuine documents from inside Trump’s campaign apparatus, including a report on Trump’s vice presidential candidate JD Vance’s “potential vulnerabilities.”

– These documents were obtained illegally by foreign sources who are hostile to the United States, and who intend to interfere in the 2024 election and spread chaos in our democratic process, says Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung in a statement.

Microsoft confirms hacking

The Trump team is referring to a report from Microsoft on Friday in which the company indicated that hackers with ties to the Iranian government tried to break into email accounts belonging to a “senior official” in the US presidential election campaign in June.

The hackers managed to take control of an email account belonging to a former political adviser and then used this account to attack the official using phishing tactics, according to Microsoft’s description.

A spokesperson for Microsoft declined Reuters’ requests to name the service person or provide more details about the identities of those involved.

The AP news agency has asked the US National Security Council for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Iran’s UN delegation have not responded to Reuters’ requests for comment on the matter.

Iran claims it is not interfering

But the Iranian UN delegation in New York commented on the Microsoft report when the Iranians were asked by Reuters about the matter. The answer was that Iran’s cyber activities are “defensive and proportionate to the threats the country faces”, and that Iran has no plans to carry out cyber attacks.

– The US presidential election is an internal affair in which Iran does not interfere, stated the UN delegation.

– The Iranians know that Trump is going to stop their reign of terror, just as he did in his first four years in the White House, Cheung says, referring to the fact that on January 3, 2020, the United States under Trump killed the leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s elite force , Qasem Soleimani.

Trump survived an assassination attempt in July. There have been no indications that the suspected perpetrator had links to Iran. But CNN reported last month that US intelligence had information about an Iranian plot against Trump. Iran has rejected it.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign team has not responded to the AP’s questions about comments on the case, nor to questions about the Democrats’ own measures against hacking.
