A US judge has dismissed Donald Trump’s multi-million dollar defamation lawsuit once morest CNN.
The ex-president accused CNN of repeatedly equating him with Adolf Hitler in reporting and demanded damages of 475 million US dollars (a good 430 million euros). Federal judge Raag Singhal, who Trump himself appointed to office in 2019, dismissed the lawsuit in Florida on Friday (local time) arguing that the cases listed in the lawsuit are opinions and not false allegations of fact. US media reported on the case over the weekend.
In detail, it was regarding: CNN had repeatedly described Trump’s unfounded claim that he was cheated of his victory in the presidential election in November 2020 as a “big lie” in its reporting. “Trump argues that ‘the big lie’ is a phrase attributed to Joseph Goebbels and that CNN’s use of the phrase falsely associates Trump with the Hitler regime in public,” Justice Singhal wrote.
“CNN’s statements, while disgusting, were not legally defamatory,” he ruled. Because the use of the expression does not allow the conclusion “that Trump supports the persecution and genocide of Jews or any other group of people”. Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels is credited with a quote that a lie need only be repeated enough times for it to be believed.
According to media reports, Trump had already filed his lawsuit in October. In the past he had repeatedly disparaged the station as a medium for “fake news”. It is one of many lawsuits Trump has filed once morest media houses such as the New York Times and Washington Post to object to their reporting during his presidency and following the lost 2020 election, CNN wrote on Saturday.
Trump wants to run once more for the Republicans in the 2024 presidential election. The ex-president is currently facing serious legal allegations. Among other things, he is charged with taking secret government documents. In addition, a special counsel is investigating Trump’s role in the storming of the Capitol in Washington in January 2021 and his attempts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
