Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Friday that he had spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and promised that if he wins the November elections there will be a “negotiation” between Ukraine and Russia to “end the war.”

On his Truth Media account, Trump described the phone call as “very good” and said that Zelensky congratulated him on his recent nomination as a Republican candidate, condemned the assassination attempt he suffered at a rally last Saturday and highlighted the “spirit of unity” of Americans.

“I appreciate President Zelensky reaching out because I, as the next president of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families,” Trump said of the war that began when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

“Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that will end the violence and pave the way forward to prosperity,” the former president promised.

This was the first conversation between the two political leaders since Trump left the White House in 2021 and also marks their first contact following the former president accepted his nomination as presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention (RCC) on Thursday.

Zelensky, for his part, indicated on his X account that in the call with Trump he highlighted the “vital” support of both parties and both legislative chambers in the United States, and expressed his gratitude for the country’s help aimed at improving its capabilities to “resist Russian terrorism.”

“We have agreed with President Trump to discuss in a personal meeting what steps can lead to a just and truly lasting peace,” the Ukrainian president added.

Trump’s opposition to military aid to Ukraine has raised questions regarding U.S. support for kyiv should the former president win a second term.

In his speech at the RNC, Trump also promised to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the one between Israel and Hamas, boasting that “neither would have happened” if he were president.

Zelensky said in an interview with the BBC on Thursday that dealing with a Trump administration would be “hard work, but we are hard workers.”
