Trump sparks outrage after statement on Medal of Honor

The statement from the Republican presidential candidate came during a meeting with Jewish contributors in New Jersey.

Among those present was Miriam Adelson, the widow of billionaire Sheldon Adelson. The married couple have for years been among the Republicans’ leading financial supporters.

In 2018, Trump awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of America’s two highest civilian honors.

Much better

During the meeting in New Jersey, he addressed Adelson and said that the medal she received hangs higher than the Medal of Honor, America’s highest military decoration awarded in the name of Congress.

– The one you got is actually much better because everyone who gets the congressional medal is a soldier. “They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets, or they’re dead,” Trump said.

Unlike them, you are “a healthy and beautiful woman,” he added.

Trump doesn’t know

The statement has caused outrage, including among American war veterans.

A spokesperson for the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has also reacted.

– Trump does not know what it is like to serve anyone but himself, says the spokesperson.

Seesaw state

Both Trump and Harris are visiting Pennsylvania this weekend, one of the key swing states in the November 5 presidential election.

Trump will address his supporters in Wilkes-Barre in the northeast of the state on Saturday evening, while Harris will begin a bus tour in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The two candidates will fight for 19 so-called electors in Pennsylvania, where the outcome is far from certain.

The same applies to two other tipping states in the so-called rust belt, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Harris leads

A compilation of several polls conducted by the website FiveThirtyEight now gives Harris a lead of just over 2 percentage points in Pennsylvania.

Trump won in 2016 with a margin of just over 44,000 more votes, while Joe Biden won in 2020 with 80,000 more votes than Trump.
