Former US President Trump has been hinting at it for a long time, now the New York Times is reporting: The Republican will not be attending the first television debate in his party’s primary campaign. This might have unpleasant consequences for his challenger Ron de Santis.

According to a newspaper report, former US President Donald Trump will not take part in the first television debate in his Republican primary campaign on Wednesday next week. Instead, he will give an online interview to former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the New York Times reports, citing people familiar with the politician’s plans.

A spokesman for Trump said that nothing had been decided on the matter so far. Trump had long indicated that he would not take part in the debate. He justified this by saying that, as a clear Republican favorite, it made no sense for him to be attacked by other potential presidential contenders.

According to the latest polls, Trump leads the Republican field of candidates for the 2024 presidential election by a wide margin with 47 percent. With 13 percent approval among the party’s voters, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trailed behind in second place. Trump’s absence from the televised debate might mean other candidates are targeting DeSantis in particular to position themselves as a primary alternative. Few of Trump’s rivals have openly criticized the ex-president, even as charges have mounted once morest him.

Also charge in Georgia

Trump now has to answer in court in connection with the 2020 election defeat in the US state of Georgia. Prosecutor Fani Willis filed 11 counts of charges once morest Trump and his associates in the Fulton County Court on Monday. Trump has until Friday next week to voluntarily appear in court.

Two days before this deadline, the TV duel will take place in the evening local time in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It will be broadcast by Fox News. Trump recently criticized Fox News for reporting on himself. After presenter Carlson and the broadcaster split, Carlson started his own media company. Fox, the Republicans and Carlson might not be reached for comment.
