Donald Trump is hosting a giant fundraising night in Florida tonight, a crucial new episode in the big donation war pitting the Republican and Joe Biden against each other in the race for the White House.
In American electoral life, money, far from taboo, is a point of pride for the camp that raises the most. It is also a necessary manna: 2024 is heralded as the costliest election cycle in the country’s history.
The two candidates have been engaged for months in this war of millions, regularly issuing statements praising the state of their finances.
That bra-de-fer was accelerated by a late March reception in New York during which Democratic President Joe Biden raised $25 million, “a record” according to his campaign team.
Today his opponent hopes to raise almost double that – from $43 million to $50 million, according to US media.
The Republican former president will attend a fund-raising night hosted by billionaire John Paulson, one of the few financiers to emerge victorious from the 2008-2009 financial crisis by betting on the collapse of the housing market.
The evening will take place in Palm Beach, not far from Donald Trump’s luxury residence, Mar-a-Lago.
814,600 dollars
Among the guests are businessman Robert Bigelow, who made his fortune in the hotel industry before running an aerospace research company, and expatriate John Katsimadis, owner of a major supermarket chain.
Both are big donors to the Republican Party.
Some of Donald Trump’s old rivals in the Republican primary will also be in attendance: Tim Scott, Vivek Ramaswamy, Doug Bergham… All of whom have since openly endorsed the 77-year-old’s candidacy and hope to take some place in a hypothetical Trump administration 2.0.
According to the Washington Post, a seat at Donald Trump’s table is worth… $814,600.
These crazy sums are used to finance the travel of candidates, pay their teams, commission polls or, perhaps most importantly, pay for TV ads.
Joe Biden, who likes to be seen as the hero of the middle class, was quick to criticize the event organized by his Republican rival in a post on social media today.
“Donald Trump is organizing a fundraiser from a group of business world billionaires who want to cut Social Security and Medicare while having tax cuts themselves,” he charged.
The Democrat currently has more coffers than Donald Trump, who faces four criminal charges and spends a fraction of the money he raises from supporters on lawyers.
While Trump is raising money from a bunch of hedge fund billionaires, our grassroots campaign raised $187M this quarter because of folks like you.
