Trump proposes “capital punishment” for drug traffickers

WASHINGTON (EFE).— Former U.S. president and Republican candidate Donald Trump traveled yesterday to Arizona, bordering Mexico, to claim his intention to achieve a “strong border” if he returns to power after the November 5 elections.

The New York tycoon appeared before the press in Cochise County, next to a section of the border wall and accompanied by local law enforcement, to repeat that if the Democrats remain in the White House, they will open the country’s doors to criminals.

Trump focused his criticism on his electoral rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I call her comrade because she is a radical left-wing Marxist. She wants open borders. I don’t understand why anyone would want that, but she wants our country to be open so criminals can come and rape and steal and do whatever they want,” he said.

Trump also advocated imposing the death penalty on sex traffickers of minors and women and on major drug traffickers.

The tycoon said that if he returns to power, he will impose new, harsher sentences against “illegal foreign criminals.”

“This includes a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years for anyone convicted of human trafficking, a guaranteed life sentence for anyone convicted of child trafficking, and the death penalty for anyone convicted of sex trafficking of children or women,” he said.

The New York magnate also announced his intention to introduce capital punishment for major drug traffickers.

“We will also impose the death penalty for anyone who kills our police officers, sheriffs, border agents or law enforcement officers. There will be a death penalty with a quicker trial, not one that lasts 15 years and exhausts everyone,” he added.

Her speech yesterday coincided with the day Kamala accepted her nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

“He is the most radical left-wing person ever to run for high political office in the history of our country,” Trump added, calling crime in the United States “unbelievable” and a “carnage of violence at levels never seen before.”

The latest figures, however, point to a general reduction in the crime rate in the first six months of 2024 compared to a year ago.

Data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA) released this August with information from 69 of the 70 cities where this organization of police chiefs is present, indicate that homicides have increased from 3,783 to 3,124, rapes from 14,472 to 13,064 and robberies from 48,529 to 45,575.

Migration figures also do not support Trump’s claim that there is an immigrant invasion.

In July, Border Patrol recorded 56,408 apprehensions at ports of entry along the southwest border, a 32% decrease from June.

Trump stepped up his campaign rallies this week to try to divert media attention from the Democratic convention, which also saw the nomination of Governor Tim Walz for vice president made official.

Kamala Harris maintains her lead in voting intentions for the moment.

According to the average carried out by the website “FiveThirtyEight”, he surpasses the conservative former president by 3.4 percentage points, with a percentage of 47.1%.
