FORMER US president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has been declared safe after reports of gunfire near him in Florida.
“Trump is safe after shots were heard nearby. No further details are available at this time,” Trump Communications Director Steven Cheung said in a statement, as reported by Anadolu, Monday (16/9).
The statement came after reports that gunshots were heard outside the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it was investigating the incident as a possible assassination attempt on Trump.
“The FBI has responded to West Palm Beach, Florida, and is investigating what appears to be an assassination attempt on former President Trump,” the FBI said in a statement.
The incident comes nearly two months after Trump was wounded in an assassination attempt on July 13. That time, Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old gunman who acted alone, opened fire on Trump during a campaign rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania.
The bullet hit Trump in the right ear. The US Secret Service, working with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating the protective incident that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. local time (1800GMT), Secret Service Communications Chief Anthony Guglielmi said on X.

Law enforcement officials told reporters they had arrested a suspect seen by U.S. Secret Service agents holding an AK-47 assault rifle outside Trump’s golf club. U.S. Secret Service personnel opened fire on the gunman who was near the property’s perimeter, a Secret Service official said.
“We have an individual in custody who we believe is a suspect,” Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.
The official also said Trump was about 1,200 to 1,500 feet (365 to 475 meters) away from the gunman. Earlier, Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., cited reports from local law enforcement that an AK-47 automatic rifle was found in the bushes.
‘The Trump campaign has released a statement confirming that former President Trump is safe. A suspect has reportedly been arrested,’ it said on X. (I-2)
