Trump fans flock to wish him a speedy recovery: “You’re a hero”

Fans of former US President Donald Trump held a prayer meeting in Milwaukee, the site of the Republican National Convention, on Sunday to wish the New York tycoon a speedy recovery following the attempted assassination he suffered on Saturday.

The rally took place in a central park in the city, the largest in the state of Wisconsin, a day before the convention that is to formalize Trump’s nomination as the Republican candidate begins, amid tight security measures.

Alexandra Schwatge displayed a giant poster with the Republican’s face and placed a wall where supporters wrote messages and wishes for Trump: “You are our hero,” “Get well soon,” “fight, fight, fight!” were some of the phrases that might be read.

“The president needs to know that he is loved, that we support him and that we will never give up. America’s freedom is worth fighting for,” Alexandra explained to EFE at this event organized by the far-right association Turning Point Action.

The event

Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old shot him with a rifle, wounding him in the right ear.

The Secret Service shot and killed the attacker, who fired from a high position outside the compound, and one member of the public died from a gunshot wound.

When Chris Leslie B. heard what had happened, “he mightn’t believe what he was seeing,” explained this woman who also participated in the rally in support of Trump.

“I was hoping that no one would be hurt and unfortunately people were and I just mightn’t believe it. Something like this hasn’t happened here since Reagan (shot and wounded in 1981), there hadn’t been an assassination attempt,” he said.

In his view, what happened is the result of the fact that “the country is really divided by the fact that there are extreme factions on both sides trying to push their agenda and people don’t meet in the middle.”

Problems

That’s why, he added, it is necessary to “start talking regarding problems” instead of “starting insulting and vilifying others.” “We cannot allow our elected officials to be afraid to run for office because they are worried regarding being assassinated,” he said.

Trump himself announced that the attack did not affect his plans to attend the convention and traveled to Milwaukee on Sunday, where he will give a speech accepting his nomination next Thursday. He also has to announce his vice presidential hopefuls soon.

Another participant in the rally was John Puchner, a singer, teacher and church musician, who last night composed a song following feeling devastated by what had happened.

Need to pray

“When I saw what happened, I felt that the world is full of evil. We must all pray, Republicans and Democrats, pray for President Biden and for Donald Trump so that we do not have more violence,” he concluded.

Toby Neuberger attended the rally with his sister, daughter and niece, wearing red “Make America Great Again” caps and T-shirts, the slogan of the Republican’s supporters.

“We are here because we love our country. We love the freedom that the United States gives us and we are here to pray, to support Trump and to pray for the family that lost their father yesterday,” he told EFE.

After what happened, he said, it is time to come together to “protect” the country and “defend Trump,” who wants “the best for the United States.”
