Candidate Geoff Diehl, supported by ex-President Donald Trump, won the primary for the US Republican gubernatorial election in Massachusetts. The former member of the state House of Representatives won the nomination ahead of businessman Chris Doughty, who was seen as the more moderate candidate in the race. Diehl is up once morest Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey, who, if elected in November, would become the first openly gay person and the first woman to hold the Massachusetts governorship. She is the clear favourite. The incumbent, Republican Charlie Baker, declined to run for a third term.

Republican voters in Massachusetts, who voted for Diehl, joined a series of Democratic-dominated states in which a Trump supporter was nominated for high office in November’s election. According to observers, this reduces the chances of Republicans winning the election. Massachusetts is considered one of the most liberal states in the USA. Nevertheless, fiscally conservative, socially moderate republican governors are often elected there as a counterpoint to the democratic majority in the state parliament.
