Trump attacks internal party competitor DeSantis

Former US President Donald Trump has attacked his internal party opponent Ron DeSantis for earlier social policy positions.

During a campaign appearance in Davenport, Iowa, Trump told supporters last night that DeSantis has campaigned in the past for cuts in Social Security and health insurance benefits and has advocated significantly raising the retirement age.

A lot of people wouldn’t know that. With him as president, there would be no such steps, Trump promised. A few months ago, the ex-president was the first Republican to announce his candidacy for the next election.

Next to Trump, DeSantis is considered the most promising internal party candidate and thus the greatest competition for the ex-president. DeSantis is also expected to apply for the presidency – but the 44-year-old has not yet declared himself.

Trump said he regularly outranked DeSantis in polls, whom he once once more mocked as “Ron DeSantus” and “Ron DeSanctimonious.” “Sanctimonious” means hypocritical in German. Trump is known for coming up with derogatory nicknames for political opponents.

“Last Battle”

He described the 2024 presidential election as “the final battle”. Addressing his potential constituents, he said, “If you put me back in the White House, the rule of the corrupt Washington establishment will come to an end.” The US would be a free nation once more. “We will fulfill our mission.”
