Major Accident Shuts Down Highway Near Tournai

A Friday morning crash involving a truck transporting hazardous materials brought traffic to a standstill on the E429 (A8) near Tournai-Froyennes. The incident occurred just before exit 34, heading towards France.

The truck, classified as an “ADR” vehicle due to its dangerous cargo, rolled onto its side, causing significant damage. The central mast was completely destroyed, and a portion of the truck ended up on the tracks leading to Brussels. Authorities were forced to close the highway in both directions as a safety precaution.

Motorists traveling towards Lille are advised to take the A7 via the A16, as the motorway is inaccessible at the interchange following the accident. Those heading towards Brussels will need to exit at Froyennes and utilize the N50 to reach Tournai or opt for the E42.
